The Great Economic News Just Keeps Rolling In

Markets Take a Hit

Once again, Wall Street wasn't satisfied with how the economy is doing.

Today's Labor Department report on employment delivered only 57,000 new jobs last month -- barely one-third of what economists were counting on.

While President Bush proclaimed that the decline in the unemployment rate to 5.9 percent from 6.4 percent during the past few months and steady -- if slow -- growth in payrolls showed his economic policies are working, Wall Street wasn't buying it.
