"Because He's A Good Man"

More and more, I find myself using that answer when asked, "Why are you supporting Kerry?"

Because he's a good man.

It's simple. It's straightforward. It's true.

It also works one other miracle - it diffuses what would otherwise be confrontational exercises in vocal volume. It's difficult for even the most dyed-in-the-wool Bush fan to dispute. And it says a pantload more than "Because he's not George Bush." And it usually leads to the question "Why is he a good man?"

He spent seven years in the military (including the four months in Vietnam, three years in the reserves, one inactive before being discharged). He came home and told the nation - correctly - that the war was a lose-lose scenario and that atrocities were committed. He's been re-elected senator for two decades, which you don't do if you don't show up for work or if you weren't good at it. His family loves him, his friends love him (including Arnold Schwarzenegger), and those who have worked and served - genuinely served - with him have nothing but praise for him.

In other words...he's a good man. And we need one now.

That's a claim that all the major players in Team Bush - or their supporters - simply cannot make.
