The Stern Factor

The SanFran Chronicle has a pretty sprawling story on how Howard Stern's clout might translate into a huge Kerry tilt among his huger audience.

The poll for the New Democrat Network shows that the die-hard "Stern Gang" has one 1 of every 6 likely voters -- including 4 percent of all voters in America considered "persuadable" on the presidential choice in November.

Stern turned against Bush after the Federal Communications Commission cracked down on his radio show and Clear Channel Communications paid a record $1.75 million to the federal government to settle alleged indecency complaints -- and dropped Stern from six of its stations.
This chart shows the breakdown thus far.

This presents a dilemma of sorts for the Kerry camp, and sadly it's due to the simplicity of the American mind. While freedom of speech, pre-emptive war, geopolitics, privacy, rights, stolen elections, squandered surpluses and all these important issues SHOULD be the issues we look at this election - the sad truth is that the most heartland and swing-state voters can easily wrap their heads around a guy talking about boobs and butt bongos on the radio (SHUDDER!).

So if Stern should decide to actively campaign for Kerry, will Kerry welcome him with open arms or keep his distance?
